  "The Fightin' 79th" CD-ROM Updates

I awoke this morning to the sad news that the people of London have been struck by a coordinated series of terror attacks to their transportation system. My thoughts and prayers go out to the people affected by these senseless and tragic acts and my hopes are that those responsible will soon be caught and brought to justice.

Work on the CD is continuing. Some of the items I had planned to give attention to were set aside because of yet another huge influx of new material on Tuesday and Wednesday, but today I will go back to the schedule and finish up double-checking all hyperlinks and rechecking all of the html commands.

On Tuesday I received the promised package from James E. Mulligan, Jr. and it contained about a dozen photographs, a copy of a wartime document relating to the funeral of Fred Hartig and a great letter with stories about Hartig and Donald Sass. Mr. Mulligan also included the contact information for the families of two former Fightin' 79th pilots and a former crew chief.

A few hours after Mulligan's package arrived I began receiving a series of e-mails from Tom Skinner with scans of more photographs and documents relating to his grandfather, Kenneth Skinner. One of the most amazing attachments was a scan of a V-Mail Lt. Skinner wrote home just after he arrived at King's Cliffe and his receipt for a copy of King's Cliffe, the book compiled by Ed Steiner which chronicles the 20th Fighter Group's history.

On Wednesday I received a response from The Ada Public Library to a query I had sent them regarding Robert Campbell. As it turns out a local historical group published a book several years ago that features biographies of local veterans, Campbell included, and the library is sending me copies of the pages where he is mentioned.

I am also awaiting a book about the famous woman golf personality Marion Hollins so that I can research a possible link between her and Fightin' 79th pilot John Hollins. Speaking of Capt. Hollins, I am still looking for information regarding his post-war career with Pan-Am Airlines and his untimely death. Anyone who might have information or who owns a copy of Champion in a Man's World: The Biography of Marion Hollins By David Outerbridge, please contact me via the website.

I have been corresponding with Jeff Norman, whose father, Harry H. Norman, was an Staff Sergeant with the 79th Fighter Squadron. The story he has told me would make a great inclusion on the CD. I won't go into details at this point, but I am hoping that he will agree to write it all down and submit it.

I might also note that some personal business could very well pull me away from working on the CD for a few days sometime in the next 14 days. This means there might not be any updates for a bit, or at least not as many, and I might be a little slower than normal in reponding to e-mails. This isn't anything life-altering, so don't worry, it is just something I have been putting off for quite awhile. This will require my undivided attention until everything is finished up, but I am hoping it will only take a day or two so that the CD's schedule won't be effected.

Don't forget, we're taking reserve orders now, just e-mail us for more information!
